So I’ve gotten it again…been bit by the bug…got the GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).
I feel like I have one last chance to spend some money. Hannah, if you’re reading this…know that this entire post is a joke
I’ve considered getting a new amp head. I’m looking at a Matchless Lightning/Clubman/Chieftain, a Divided by 13 RSA 23/RSA 31/FTR 37, or a 65 Amps London/Soho. In this consideration, I’m also considering selling the Dr. Z Maz 18 head (and possibly the small 1×12 cab). I love that amp a lot, but would like to hear some of the others and how they pair up with my Bad Cat Cub II.
Anyways…anybody using any of these with suggestions? Should I just stick with my Z?
Hey Nate. I recommend keeping the Z, it’s a great amp as you know and worth keeping! But if you stick with the idea of getting a new head, then I would suggest you buy the Matchless. /13 and 65 Amps are great amps too.
However, nothing goes with a Bad Cat amp like a Matchless, you just can’t go wrong with those two amps together.
Yea I definately agree with Olli. I would keep the z but if you really wanna new head the matchless and bad cat would be a great combo
I’d recommend keeping the MAZ 18 NR. If you decide to sell it though….let me know. I might be interested in spite of already having one. One clean and one dirty might could cover a lot of ground.
As an alternative, I’d recommend getting a different cabinet or speakers for your MAZ. I use a Celestion Blue, Celestion Greenback, or Doc’s 4×10 cabinet. MUCH better than the G12H in my opinion (particularly if yours isn’t broken in.
Just my humble opinion.
Well…heck, I might as well ask…what are you looking for that you aren’t getting out of the MAZ?
Hey Nathan,
Great choice of amps! I’m actually looking for that Maz 18 setup and have a 1996 2×10 Matchless Spitfire I might trade you for it…If interested let me know!! I’m local here in Atlanta as well!
Thanks
Michael
You should check out Thomas Amps. Butch lives in Bethlehem Ga… and Builds the best amps I have ever played… I have owned Two Bad Cats, Dr. Z’s etc… and his are the best! Its a really small operation out of his house… he can build you anything!
Josh-
Funny you should stop by…I was just looking at your amp on his site earlier tonight. I think I’m going to give him a call tomorrow to chat and check it out…
how much for the DR.Z??
$1000 for the head…local pickup only for now though.
Are u still selling the dr.z maz 18? I live local and would be interested. I just started doing worship at my church and the peaveys 6505 cleans suck. Good distortion though:)
sorry man…already sold it! good luck!
Get a Tophat amp (club royale) or an Orange AD-30 they arent one trick ponys they both can do anything..
or a Mesa Boogie Lonestar. Remedy Drive uses AD-30/Lonestar sounds disgusting.
Peace
Here’s a link to a photo of my 18 watt JONES amp. Don Jones made this “dragonslayer” for me, and I love it. I can go from glassy clean to “botched electrocution in the Florida State Pen” sound. Cabinet is by JD Newell. I run my pedal board right through the front door, and this thing sounds fabulous. You should look up Jones Amplifiers and talk to Don. He’s built several for me, and my friend, Kerry Livgren…formerly of KANSAS owns and uses one too.

Hi Nate you should check out Morgan amplification. Really good amp hand made build in CA. Really good amps. Ask Alex Nifong for his opinion.
I’ve heard a lot about them recently…Alex told me he was getting one and I heard it last week. Sounds great! My buddy Brian just got one too and it sounds killer!
Which Morgan amps have you heard?? Which one sounds the best?? Thanks!!
Not certain but I think a dual 40 and ac20. A few of my friends have them and swear by them next to their ac30s!
Hey man… I currently own a 65 London Pro and a Bad Cat Hot Cat 30. I love both of these amps, but they definitely different beasts. The London is sooo buttery that it almost plays itself! While the Bad Cat is more punchy. I’m about to start running them both in stereo, but have yet to do it. The 65′s are so pleasing the ear that it is quickly becoming my favorite. I can play it for hours at loud volumes and not have the ear fatigue that other amps give me.
