New Music Tuesday

We’ve been out of school on fall break yesterday and today and when I woke up this morning, I took my time getting out of bed. One of the first things I did was get on the iTunes app on my iPhone. I immediately noticed how many great artists were releasing new music today! Thought I’d pass along a few of the albums I bought today:

NEEDTOBREATHE – “The Reckoning” – Who doesn’t like NEEDTOBREATHE? I think many of us have been awaiting their follow-up album to “The Outsiders”, so I’m looking forward to listening through “The Reckoning“.

Gungor – “Ghosts Upon The Earth” – I’ve known of Gungor for a few years. I heard of them when we were playing a Student Life Camp with a team who had been with them a few weeks before we were with them. I got “Beautiful Things” last year before Passion 2011, and quickly fell in love. There isn’t much to not love about them. I knew they had a new album coming out, but had no idea it was out today. Super excited to listen to “Ghosts Upon The Earth“!

Leeland – “The Great Awakening” - I’m not sure Leeland will ever be able to follow up their first album, “Sound of Melodies”, but I’m excited that they’re still making music…and good music at that. Can’t wait to get “The Great Awakening“.

ALL THE BRIGHT LIGHTS – “Still Beating – Single” – I love these guys. They just make good music and I can’t get enough of their self-titled album. Can’t wait for more from them! In the meantime, grab “Still Beating” and get some major value in 99cents for a 7 minute song!

I know that there are many other releases today, including one of my friends from college, Jamie-Grace, but these are a few that I’m particularly excited about.

Vinyl.

So I’m obviously late on this, but I finally got a record player this week. My parents had one growing up…not because tapes weren’t around then, but I guess my dad had acquired the taste for vinyl. He still has quite the collection of Skynard, Journey, the Police, Kenny Rogers and even Madonna (of course he says it’s my mom’s…). I remember being a little kid and dancing around the living room to my Mickey Mouse kid songs and kids Christmas songs record.

A few months ago, we were in the record store in Marietta Square and I saw the Civil Wars on vinyl and decided to get it with the intentions of buying a record player shortly after. Then for our first year anniversary, Hannah got me a copy of the original Thriller record while she was out in California. But still…no record player.

After finally getting it earlier this week and listening to both records in their entirety, I think I’m obsessed. The scratching and modulation sounds…they just feel good. Don’t get me wrong…I love being able to listen to a whole album without having to get up to flip it over to the other side (can you imagine if we had record players in cars?! between the bumping and flipping…even though we used to flip tapes in the car), but there is something special about listening to vinyl to me.

After dinner together last night, we put a record on in the living room and sat on the couch and just chilled. Bigsby even laid down next to us and relaxed. There was something about that moment. Just sitting, reading and listening to a record as a family after dinner. It felt funny to think how many families could have done that years ago. Even before records, they used to do that with radio shows. All I’m saying is that it was nice.

And now I want more vinyl. And I will be going to record store again tomorrow. And hoping to not spend a lot.

New Music Tuesday

So I downloaded some new music yesterday and wanted to share some with you. Ironically, none of it is really new, but it’s all new to my iTunes library. I’m not going to give a review on these (partially because I haven’t listened to them enough for a review to be really beneficial), but you can download them for yourself and feel free to post a review here in a comment.

  • “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Greatest Hits” // It’s on sale in iTunes for $7.99 and although I have some Petty songs, always a good to have a greatest hits album.
  • “The Light Meets Dark” – Tenth Avenue North // Another album on sale…$6.99! Love this band. Mike is one of the most inspiring worship leaders I’ve ever worshiped with…first time we worshiped together, dude quoted what seemed like a whole chapter of Romans. Great followers of God and songwriters.
  • “Close To You” – Molley Moody // Molley is awesome. She moved from Nashville last year to Atlanta and leads at Passion City Church. I stumbled upon this gem of an EP on iTunes and have been enjoying her voice. Very chill. I like it.
  • “Basics EP” – Chris Coleman Band // When I started college, I found a few other guys down the hall in the dorm who loved music a lot…and they were good. Since then, Chris Coleman became a part of Six Piece Suit for a while and also started the Chris Coleman Band. Until recently, the Chris Coleman Band was basically my college roommates. We had a lot of good times and still remain close friends, so it’s super cool for me to buy this EP and support them and some of the songs that we worked on together in college…with a new fresh take on them. I’d buy this even if we weren’t close friends…well done, CCB!
Y’all have any new music that you’re digging right now?

New Music You Have To Get

My friend, Loyd Rieves, moved to Atlanta with his wife Deeann and have become good friend of mine and Hannah’s. They are both very talented artists. Loyd also plays guitar for Christy Nockels.

Loyd just recorded and released an EP on NoiseTrade. It’s incredibly good. I knew Loyd as a great guitar player, but had never heard his songs or heard him sing. I think you’ll enjoy this little EP a lot. Download it here and be sure to “tip” him for it. It’s crazy good.

Ambient Sounds and Pads

Even though I wrote this post forever ago, I wanted to come back and explain it in a little more detailed manner.

I had heard of a few guitar players who would make ambient pad sounds on the fly live and loop them. Pads are great for transitions and just filling up the mix as well. I knew that I could make these loops on the fly or record a bunch of presets and use them live in different keys, running my guitar through my effects and running the looper into an amp. This is what I had heard and seen some other guys do before, but it just didn’t make sense to me.

I would have to buy another amp to run the pads through (increasing my rig to three amps with my stereo amps) and would be another pedal to put on my board and so on. But if I got rid of the amp, then the tone of my guitar alone with the pedals would not sound near as good.

I thought I could record some keyboard pad sounds from Reason into the Boss RC-20XL Loop Station and only have to run an output from the Looper. The Boss Looper allows you to record into it and save it and loop it. I chose the Boss RC-20XL over some other loopers simply because Chris Orr already had one and gave it to me. It’s got eleven presets and I just use each one for a different key of pad (although I really only use 6-7 of them). I found a few good sounds in Reason, ran an output from my computer and into the Looper and recorded the pad holding the I and V in every key we play in on the Looper. I only record about ten seconds of pad sounds and cut off the recording while I’m holding it the keys still, so that it loops cleanly. Because I play the I and V, there typically aren’t any times that the notes sound dissonant (you have to watch it in different chord progressions though…and be sure to watch it during any key changes as well). I will play a few different octaves for some of the keys, depending on how they sound, but I typically play the I on two octaves and the V just on one.

Live I just run the Looper into a volume pedal and into a DI. This lets me control the volume without bending over and twisting the knob. I still run my stereo amps and then get another line ran for the pad. We mix it very low in the house so you can hear it during transitions well, but it doesn’t cut through the mix while we’re playing very much at all. Because it’s really there to fill the mix just a little and help during transitions, make sure you don’t go overboard in making the sounds or mixing them in the house. By itself, it gets boring, old and doesn’t sound good playing by itself for a long period of time. I will usually pick through some clean, delayed chords or make other ambient noises using my volume pedal, delays and reverb play some partial chords to add variety (pulling your tone knob back on the guitar and turning up the repeats has a nice effect as well).

I haven’t heard of anyone else doing it like this, but have found it to be the easiest and cheapest way for me. I hope this helps and y’all can take it and run with it. Let me know if you have any other questions…

Six Piece Suit on iTunes Now

A few years ago, my friends and I started a worship band. Things took off quickly after we played a retreat for North Cobb Christian School and then ended up leading First Baptist Church Woodstock weekly. We recorded a four-song demo that fall (2006). We didn’t really know what we were doing but it turned out pretty cool and we learned a lot from it.

Although we closed the door for the band, the demo just hit iTunes. Get it here for under $4!

Jeffrey Hardy Music Showcase

So I’m playing a showcase with Jeffrey Hardy tomorrow night. Jeffrey is one of my friends whose music I listen to simply because it’s good. Some people listen to their friends out of obligation, but not so with Jeffrey. His EP released last year and is so good.

Tomorrow night at 10 at the Uptown Lounge in Atlanta, we’ll be playing for some record labels and really would love to have any and all of you there. Price should be around $10. Hope you can make it!

How Did I Get Here?

I’ve gotten some questions from people asking me how I got to where I am today and how they can be able to get to do what I do. I thought I’d just share my story. Let me preface this all by saying that there is nothing really special about me. I haven’t done anything to deserve what I’ve been given. It’s honestly just me opening up my heart and life to God and Him giving me open door after open door (and a few closed ones occasionally as well).

When I was in middle school, my brother was given an acoustic guitar. I started to teach myself to play it after he hadn’t used it yet for many months. I had a few people give me guidance, but I was finally given my own acoustic my eighth grade year. It was then that I started to play at my home church here and there, as well as at the Christian school I attended occasionally. Once I hit high school, I was on the school praise team, as well as playing on Wednesday nights for the students at my home church. Through doing this, I was able to meet people and make connections from playing together. Other people who played at church or worship music and I networked (networking might be one of my spiritual gifts…I love it!). From this, I was able to build relationships and friendships with some other people that shared this common interest, passion and calling with me.

My senior year in high school, my girlfriend at the time’s brother and I decided to start a worship band. We asked a few more friends to join and about a year later, we were a complete band. Six Piece Suit began by leading worship at my Christian high school’s retreat the fall after I graduated. From that, we started leading worship at First Baptist Church Woodstock for their high school service and serving weekly. This opened up a lot of doors for all of us. Although there are a lot of other events that allowed me to network more and serve more, this was the biggest one. Eventually we were asked to lead other places and later on, other leaders and bands would ask us to fill in or play with them.

So how do you get where God’s brought me and blessed me with? Here’s what I’d suggest:

  • Understand that the Lord calls different people to do different things. You can’t be me. I can’t be you. Be yourself and do what you can to glorify God wherever and whatever that is.
  • Take a step back and pray about it. Just because it sounds cool or you like to play the guitar doesn’t mean that you’re called to do it. The keyword is called. This is a big deal and something that God definitely calls you to do and be.
  • Serve. Wherever that is and whatever needs to be done. I have worked doing production and audio/video/lighting before being able to play at some places. The point is serving. Serving, by definition, means that you do what needs to be done, giving of yourself for the cause.  Churches in every town are always looking for people to serve (and a lot are looking for musicians). Just because you aren’t playing at the hippest of cool churches or the ones that pay the big bucks (or the ones that pay at all) doesn’t mean anything’s wrong. I don’t mean go to a church just because you want to play there…go to the church you would attend, get plugged in at and serve at anyways.  Serve first.
  • Network. Whenever you play, meet the people you play with. Also, take advantage of meeting other worship leaders and musicians. Do not be annoying and call them all the time asking if you can play with them or if they need you. Make sure they know you’re available if they want/need you, but let them come to you. If you’re serving somewhere, you’re also building up references from the leaders and other musicians there.

Again, there’s no magic formula, but it really starts by serving in your local church. Find a church that you feel at home at (if you don’t already have one) and start serving however you can (again, might not be music at first, but make sure you express that interest).
