  1. Nathan how is the Exotic RC booster workin for ya?
Im kinda flip floppin between it and the Fulltone OCD.
The OCD sounds Sick and kinda like my fulldrive wich I love.
Im trying to finish off my overdrive ensamble which is.

Fulltone Fulldrive 2 non-mosfet with black knobs
    Proco Rat 2
and maybe an OCD or an AC booster or RC booster I cant choose.
Can you help me choose If you was in my position what would you do because I need more of a versatile overdrive than a pedal that can do only one thing thanks.

    • i’d definitely go with an ac booster…the rc booster is great for clean boosts and the drive sounds good, but ac booster is better for drive. the ocd is a great pedal, but it’s a high gain drive, like your rat. i’d definitely go with the ac booster…

  2. I heard that only one man builds that Timmy, and it’s homemade! What special feature does the Vox AC15cc1x have in comparison to AC15cc1 and it costs twice as much?

  3. Oh I forgot, where did you get your pedalboard? Can’t fit all my pedals on my old board anymore and i’ve been looking around and still can’t find a good one..

  4. Hey nate, me again.. how do u tune your guitar without being heard when u have your Ernie Ball VP as your gain control?
what is that POG what do you use it for? thanks!

    • same way you tune it without controlling gain. the volume pedal works the same both ways and control volume, but with it before the drives when you pull it back some, you lose volume and gain. make sense? so the tuner works the same out of the tuner out.

    • i put it after my drives, but i use it as a light drive, or a clean boost. i’m not sure where you’re really “supposed” to have a clean boost in your chain, but that’s where mine is because i like boosting the driven sound, rather than driving the boosted sound. the ac booster would be the same thing i believe…depends what you’re using it for i guess, but around the drives somewhere…

    • hey dayton…it’s a mod by my friend jack vaughn (jhv3.com) that is equivalent to having an expression pedal plugged up. with an expression pedal, you can have two settings on each of your presets as long as they’re in the same delay mode.

for example, with an expression pedal in, you have a toe down and heel down setting for each preset. with the mod, it allows me a toe down setting (with the switch off) and a heel down setting (with the switch on). so therefore i get more settings out of each of my 3 presets and is almost like having 6 presets.

i know it’s confusing, but i’ll post a video demo soon.

  5. Anyone have setting suggestions for the POG2. I just picked one up after hearing that type of effect from nifong, carson and adkins, and I know the original POG or a wammy can be used to pull off the same things. But the POG2 is pretty tweakable and I can’t get the same effect. Can’t tell if im using too much, not enough dry signal, or which of the upper octaves to boost more. Any suggestions welcomed! thanks-

    • i typically use the micro pog with almost all my dry rolled in (seems like i’m losing volume turning to pedal on if the dry isn’t up that high, but maybe it’s just me) and my octave up at about 2:00 or so (just a little behind the dry) and then roll in just a little bit of sub octave for fun. hope that helps some!

  6. i’m needing a comparison between the fulltone fulldrive2 mosfet, and the new fulltone gt500. I can only afford to buy one of these, and it would serve as my only the only overdrive pedal on my board. Any suggestions, Nathan or anybody, would be greatly appreciated!

    • sorry, but i’ve never played at gt500 and don’t really know a lot of the difference between the old regular fulldrive 2 and the mosfet. hopefully someone else can chime in here…

    • hmm, coyboy, now that would make a snazzy license plate… haha, had to give you a hard time josh. And yes, the fulldrive 2 hands down. But check out the Exotic AC booster PLUS. Kinda set up like the fulldrive but with two seperade drives and volumes. Thinkin about swaping out the OCD for it. Later-

  7. Fulldrive 2 hand’s down.
The Mosfet circuit in the new Fulldrive is more agressive than the older one. If you turn the tone all the way up on the Fulldrive and add the boost it can get pretty nasty.

    • you’ve come to the right place, rupert. your dry signal is your uneffected signal with no effects on it, just your guitar and amp. your wet signal is with effect on the dry. when blending between the two, when you dial in more wet signal (on like a delay pedal), you get more of the delay repeats and dialing in the dry signal makes the delay effect level go down and you can’t hear the delay as much. make sense…?

    • i use each of them differently…the dl4 i use for more weird and not-so-straight-forward type delays. the dd-20 i use for standard delay sounds (quarter note, dotted 8th in digital and analog settings mostly. the dd-5 just runs to one amp when running stereo and i’ll delay it just a little bit to get a cool full and thicker sound. i’m also using an eventide timefactor for a blend between the weird delays that the dl4 does and normal standard delays like the dd-20.

  8. Hey Nathan,

Greetings from San Antonio, TX! I randomly came across your site and really love all of the gear discussion. I’ve got a quick question. Do you prefer the Fulldrive 2 or an AC Booster for a medium crunch? It seems like the fulldrive is basically on everyone’s board, but i keep hearing great things about xotic’s stuff. I’m basically having to start from scratch with my drives. I’m looking for a low gain drive, medium, and high – and some kind of solo boost also. I’d love your input. Thanks and God bless!

    • hey man…welcome! i’ve never used an ac booster, but i’ve heard good things about it. the fulldrive is pretty versatile, but i prefer it for a medium/heavier drive. the fd2 is pretty standard and is a good pedal. also, check out the sparkle drive…it can do anything from light to heavy drive. a blues driver or rc booster are great for a light drive as well.

if you could afford one…the timmy is the best and most transparent drive i’ve ever heard. it can do anything too…

      • more medium drive…which means i use it most. i just the rc booster for the light stuff and the timmy for everything else (either by itself or with the rc booster). the fd2 is just for heavier stuff…and i use it a lot for sustain and octaves.

  9. Hey Nathan,

Congrats on this great site and great gear. Love all the discussions you are hosting. Wanted to really encourage you to checkout teh Xotic AC Booster and BB Preamp. I had the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet and must say that the Xotic pedals as well as the Hermida Zendrive blow the Fulldrive away. Check it out man. Feel free to listen to some of my sound clips as well as performance with Matt Maher. Look under Jon Niven Band link. Look forward to hearing from you. Again, your stuff is very inspirational. Love your gear. Peace, -G.

  10. Hi Nathan!

I’ve been following this site for some time now, and learned a lot about worship (music) and a lot more. This site is really inspirational, and for me – it changed my guitar playing a lot in some ways. I just wanna thank you for that, and keep doing what you’re doing.

P.S I just bought a Duesenberg Carl Carlton yesteday, what a great guitar!

Best wishes and prayers from Finland,
    Olli.

    • so cool…thanks so much for sharing. that really means a lot and i’m glad to know God is using this site that i consider to be a ministry to be exactly that. God bless!

  11. Hello, I just found this discussion here, and it is proving very helpful for me. I have played guitars for about 6 years but mostly acoustic. so i am new to the amp world and have made 1 good by. a fender hotrod delux. it works good for the country stuff i play at bars and what not. but i am really struggling to find a good amp for playing at church. we run about 300 in a building that can hold about 500. so i don’t need a big amp. am thinking about a 15 wat or so. do you have any suggestions on good tube 15 waters. have seen lots of people using voxs. is it hard to find an older brit made vox 15?
    thanks

    • glad to help…fender or vox stuff is my favorite, especially older ones. they aren’t that hard to find really either…ebay or thegearpage.net is great.

      • thanks very much will start looking. when you play, do you only use your clean channel and then use your peddles to get your drive? is this how a lot of players do it? thanks

      • i don’t have multiple channels, but i run the amp just a little driven…it’s a matter of preference. amp drive obviously sounds better than pedal drive

  12. Nathan, I have a question that sort of relates. I am in need of a new vehicle and I was wondering what you typically use. I typically play with the pedaltrain pro, vox ac30 (with ata case), typically 2 or 3 guitars, and a medium sized tool box for carrying cables. I have used a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo for 3 years now, but it is reaching its end. Any suggestions as to what would allow me to “comfortably” transport all these with the back seats still available for use?

    • i love this question…haha! it really depends on your price range. and using the back seats is a harder thing too, because that would mean you’d just be using the trunk/cargo space. i drive a jeep patriot and there is room for both of my amps, pedalboard, guitars and a few other odds and ends (suitcases or tool boxes), but i can’t use the backseats. i think the best car for toting gear is a honda element, but you’d run into the same problem there with the back seats.

i wish i could give you a better idea, but keeping those back seats is a tough point. medium sized suv’s are my pick, but i don’t think you’d be able to use the back seats. let me know what you end up going with…

  13. Hey Nathan, I am currently making a small pedalboard and am not sure if I should use the real estate on a tremolo pedal. How often do you use tremolo in your playing? I don’t hear them too often in recordings, but do you think it is necessary? So far this is what I think my board will look like:

Fulltone Clyde Wah -> Keeley Compressor -> Tim Drive -> Cusack Screamer Fuzz -> Ernie Ball VPJR -> Eventide TimeFactor -> ??Tremolo??

    Thanks for the help!

    • i don’t use it a whole lot, but enough for it to take up some room on a smaller board. it’s really the only mod effect i use consistently. i’m about to update my gear on here, and you’ll see what i’m doing now, as i’ve had the same problem.

  14. Hey nathan. I was planning on kicking off my ts9 and getting a RC booster. I’ve been using my fd2 for my primary od, and the ts9 as a boost. Not too fond of the middy sound of the ts9. How does the RC booster fit in with the FD2? Do they sound good together?

    • they sound well…i don’t use the two together a whole lot, because the timmy is in between them in order of least to heaviest drives. i love the light drive from the rc booster and the heavier and lighter stuff with the fd2. but

  15. Hey Nate!First off, congratulations on getting married..i just want to seek some help on some setting on your boss rv-5..im kinda getting annoyed by the sound it gives me..i use dotted 8 a lot with reverb on modulation but im not liking the sound it makes..im looking for a reverb sound like Steve Marcia..hope you can help me out..thanks!

    • I got to hang with Steve a few months back. What a cool guy and great tone. Steve uses some of the less popular pedals/amps/guitars in worship music and i think thats what sets his tone apart.
It depends on what delay youre using(digital, analog, tape) pre-verb. 1/2 the time Steve doesnt use a verb live(crazy i know) just a dl4, dd20 and rt-20. On an RV5 i usually set it on modulate, level anywhere from 10-1, tone around 930-10 and time around 11-12 with delays added for thick verb/ambience(as SM advised). on modulate i think the key is the tone and level to keep it in control and not wash out the delays too much. hope that helps :)

      • well steve has a unique tone attribute it to his bad black cat amps, and his board the last time i saw it and photographed it consisted of a
        Boss TU-2
        Tone Press
Hermida Audio Mosferatu (that i sold to him)
He spoke of adding a RC Booster in the very near future
        Digitech Whammy 2
        Boss RT-20
        Boss DD-20
        Line 6 Dl4
and than some sort of what appeared to be reverb unit last in his signal… i dont remember if it was a line 6 or a boss but it definitely resemebled a reverb unit ill look at the pics again and re-check

with that said the dude is a incredible guitarist, an inspiration to all of us and is awesomely unprecedented when he’s on stage with his minimalist pedal train board and custom guitars…

  16. Hay Nathan, i just bought a ac15 tbx. I know you said you had some work done to yours i was wondering what all you think should be done to it to make it better. this one has a bulldog speaker in it instead of a salestrian blue so i will get one of those for sure but what else do you recommend. Also do they not make the Boss dd5 delay any more, i haven’t been able to find one. thanks

    • i upgraded the caps and transformers in mine…i’d suggest upgrading to a celestion blue first and going from there.

the dd-5 is not made anymore, but the dd-7 is about the same…

  17. Nathan,
I have own an AC30 and recently started running it off stage at church. I did this because I am jacking the amp up to get the signature overdriven vox sound that you can’t get without running it at 11 haha. That overdriven sound is my main drive and I am boosting it with an OCD (fixing to switch to either a Blues Driver or TS808) for leads and I am rocking my volume pedal back significantly for cleans. I don’t have a 50 ft cable so right now I am running a non TRS cable from my pedalboard to a direct box and then a 25 ft xlr cable into a impedence transformer that is also a xlr to male quarter inch. Essentially the signal looks like this

pedalboard > 25ft cable to DI > 20 ft. xlr > amp with transformer

However, with this chain, I am losing a little bit of signal. How do you go about running your amps off stage without losing any tone or signal?

    • Radial makes an interface called an SGI (Studio Guitar Interface). It has absolutely 0 loss of signal. Little pricey, but perfect for off stage/closet/iso box/live use even though it was made for studios.
      pedalboard>1/4>SGI>XLR(up to 300 ft)>SGI>1/4>amp
Dont know is thats what Nathan uses, but they work perfectly.

      • SGI is the best thing to use…but a little pricey for me to own personally. I just use a longer 1/4″ cable…

  18. Hey Nathan,
Thanks for this website! Its been a great help!

I just wanted to ask about the american standard telecaster. How do you like it? As a strat guy, I’m looking into teles and am wondering if you can give your opinion on teles.

    Thanks and God bless!

  19. Nathan,

I have an amp question. Are you familiar with the ac-30tb “vintage series”? I believe these were made in the early 90′s when Vox was owned by Rose Morris. I have the opportunity to buy one for a great price, but I’ve heard that the AC-30′s built during this time weren’t the best in production quality. Do you know if there’s a big difference between this amp and the korg reissues? Should I hold out for a korg reissue? I just don’t want to fall into a money pit by getting something that is known for breaking down. I’d appreciate your input. Thanks and God Bless!

    • not really familiar with those man…i’ve heard the same thing about vox’s in the early 90′s, but i think mid-90′s and beyond are ok. just not really sure…

    • that’s the one i use in a black bullet. i like it a lot…it’s a decent price for a great case and board.

if you can wait a few more months, i know dashboards is about to release a cheaper alternative to their current boards. might be worth looking into…

      • yeah i’ve checked out dashboards too. i think im just going to go with the pedaltrain pro. my dad actually called the showcase company a few days ago and it turns out they went out of business in august.

    • i took it to a local amp guy. if you’re in atlanta, i’ve got a few names for you. i don’t know what my caps are, but i’ve got mercury magnetics transformers…

  20. Nathan, I recently bought the Eventide Timefactor thinking that I would be able to program BPM’s into bank mode…However, the unit will not allow me to have one song at 110 BPM that I want for Bank 1, and another song at 150 BPM that I want for Bank 2. Is there a secret to this, or is it just not possible?

    • hey jordan, if you go into the menu on the pedal under global there should be a global mix and global tap tempo. make sure that the global tap tempo is off and it should fix your problem. i keep the global tap on with mine so that i can swap presets and not have to retap the tempo.

  21. Hey Nathan what would be a better compression pedal with lots of sustain, great tone, and eq? Also, what are the best cables to use to connect your pedals on your pedal board. Thanks for your help.

    • You can’t go wrong with a dyna-comp, but I saw a video of keith urban’s rig recently and he had some boss compressor/sustainers that he swore by. Might be worth looking into.

Also, I’d use lava cables or George l’s patch cables.

  22. Hi!

Quick question. I know that Daniel Carson is currently running two DD-5s synced to one tap tempo, and it looks like you are, too. Do you notice if the delays drift? I ask because I’m trying to duplicate that setup with DD-7s. I made my own split patch cable (which could be part of the problem), and it seems that the first delay will stay on tempo and the second one will be just a millisecond off or so, so that after ten or fifteen seconds, they’re noticeably off.

Do you have that problem? I’m trying to see if it’s an issue of the cable, or if it’s just a natural problem with trying to sync two delays via tap tempo. Thanks, and I love the site!

    Ben

    • hmm…strange. I’d try it with a different cable see what you get (not knocking your cable-making skills!). Only one of my DD-5s is hooked to a tap switch now as the other is set by the tempo knob on the pedal. Good luck!

    • Check the polarity to make sure that they are both receiving their tempo when you are tapping down (instead of one receiving the tap & the other receiving the release of the tap).

  23. Hey what would you recommend for a low gain/clean boost od pedal: keeley bd2, fulltone fulldrive 2 mosfet, or xotic ac or rc booster? And would a timmy be better then a tubescreamer for medium od?

    • Hey bro, when choosing an OD for yourself, i would recommend that you find your own tone first, what kind or style of music you play, and then from there you would know what to get..It’s just for me, you know. It took me years to find my own tone and style of playing. I didn’t just content myself sounding like the guitar players that inspire but i learn from them and I also learned that you don’t need a bunch of pedals to sound good. Hope that helps..God Bless!

  24. Hey Nathan,
I am looking into the Joyride–>Timmy stack for my AC15, and wondered how it was working out for you. Are you just using the RC booster to push the amp to the breakup point?
Also, I wondered how you were finding the DMM in worship, or if it was just simpler to use the DL4. I’m running the timefactor, but looking at something for analog delay.

    • actually man…i love both pedals, but them together is a weird combination…they’re very similar so i’m having some problems getting them to do different things and still have them sound good. definitely worth trying though if you can afford it and find them.

      • I am in the same situation as Mark. I’m considering selling my DD-20 in order to get a TRUE analog delay pedal. Nathan, did you ever try running your Timefactor with the DMM? Just wondering because that is my primary delay now. I have only heard great things about both, but am stuck wondering which pedal provides the more spacey feel.

      • I actually traded by TF for a DMM so I never used them together. Sorry I can’t help more! I imagine they’d sound great together though!

      • I’m hoping to buy (for now) two drive pedals that will cover all of my needs. I’m not a fan of huge amounts of gain, so I’m thinking the RC booster and the timmy. Running the rc booster to push the amp to a very light od and kick the timmy on for a medium gain. I just am not a huge fan of the fulldrive for lower gain, so I am getting rid of it. Thoughts?

      • dude you were in the same room with Mr. Nifong! Do you have any update on his board? Is he still with the Worship Central team?

      • yeah, alex is a friend on mine! i don’t think he’s changed anything, but i haven’t snagged any pictures of his board recently. he has been gone for three weeks but is coming back right now. i’ll see if i can update some stuff soon…

  25. hey im looking for a very versatile guitar for worship that goes great with pedals through a clean amp. how do you like your american standard tele?

  26. Ya but here’s the problem. I am the only lead/electric guitarist at my church so is a tele to bright for that? If im the only one should i get a more versatile guitar or is the tele perfect for what im trying to do. Les Pauls might be too expensive so maybe a strat, a fat strat, or a tele? Id really appreciate your input and advice for the best/most versatile electric guitar for modern worship. And i know its all personal preference but im lost right now lol. If this helps any, I have a Ernie Ball VP, boss tuner, keeley compressor, keeley katana, ibanez ts808, fulltone ocd, boss dd7, and nova delay all into a vox ac15. Thanks!

    • Hey Patrick,
A telecaster would be fine even if it’s the only electric guitar in the band. I’ve played my telecaster with the band even when I was the only one on electric guitar. I have a Les Paul too. I think you have to adjust your settings depending on which guitar you use. When I play my tele, I have to crank up the lows and roll down the highs on my AC15 because it is a lot brighter than the Les Paul. I like either guitar, and it doesn’t matter if I’m the only electric guitarist or not.

      • I have the same setup (Tele, LP, or Casino into an ac15) I just use a Sonic Stomp to accommodate for the brightness, and run the amp pretty dark on the brilliant channel.

    • Yeah man…a tele would be great! I’ve used a tele as the only guitar for a while and I know a lot of people who do. I’d just make sure the tone isn’t too bright and thin. Hope that helps!

      • Thanks guys! And what would be best, american deluxe, american vintage or american standard? What are the differences between these?

    • not sure what you mean about the tremolo of the delays…i use the tremolo before some delays and after others. if i were to re-do the board, i’d probably put the tremolo last in front of the reverb.

the order of the delays is just based on what i want to carry on last. for example, i want the echo park and dd-5 with the reverse setting to be towards the end so it’s picking up everything.

    • i’ve never played with a ts9, so someone else might be able to help you out better. but i love a timmy or a joyride. they’re not really cheap either, but the most transparent od’s i’ve ever used…

  29. Hey nathan. how do you use each of your delay pedals. Do you use the boss pedals for standard delays (eighth, dotted eighth, triplet, quarter, and reverse) and then the other two for analog. Or is each pedal set to a certain type of delay. if so can you tell me what you use each one for? Thanks

    • i use one dd-5 for a dotted eighth most of the time and the other for a reverse delay that can fill some space most of the time. i use the echo park with an analog setting that sounds pretty cool…longer repeats and lots of modulation. the dl-4 i’ll use for pads, lo-res, and tube echo. so basically one dd-5 is a standard digital delay and the others are analog or some weird kind of delay. hope that helps…

    • never used the cmatmods stuff actually. although i’ve heard that the brownie is an unbelievable drive pedal. but i can’t really say i’ve ever used any of them, including the butah. sorry! but i will say that the timmy is still my favorite drive pedal…

  30. Hey man. Just got a Timmy and an RC booster and love them both. How do you usually have your set? And would you prefer the RC before the Timmy or after?

    Thanks buddy!

    • honestly, i have no idea. it depends on what guitar i’m playing and what other pedals i’m using. if i just had the two and was running them both for drive, i’d probably run the RC first as a light drive and the timmy next for higher gain stuff. however, if you’re looking to use the timmy as your main drive and use the rc to kick it up as a boost (clean or dirty), i’d run the RC second. that actually sounds pretty good to me…especially if you can get the timmy to work well for lighter stuff too (or just use the amp sound with no drive for the lighter stuff).

  31. Pingback: Pedalboard Update: Fall 2011 | nathanwright.org

  32. Hey Nathan, I Just found this page… AWESOME!! So can you give some insight to cables and power supplies?
I’ve ran into some trouble with some of my pedals, and I thought it was cable issues, and someone said it could be power??? I’m really missing my pedals I’ve pulled off my board. Any thoughts? joe

  33. Hey Nathan I got a question I want your opinion on. For my drive I use a fulldrive 2 and a sparkle drive. I can’t seem to find a combo I want to stick with. I’m thinking about putting the sparkle drive first kind of like an ac booster, and then run the fulldrive with a little more gain. What do you think, or what would you do if you had just those pedals for drives?

    Thanks
    Michael

    • i think that sounds like a great plan michael! then you can adjust the gain knob and blend on the sparkle drive to taste…

      good luck!

      • yeah i started to get a good tone out of it but decided to start upgrading. so i traded those pedals for a timmy and just got an ac15. I guess I’ll see where that takes me. lol

  34. Hey Nathan! I just want to start off by saying God bless for this site! It really helped me learn a lot about pedals! I just have a question about buffer pedals. Have you heard of the This1sMyne little buffer pedal? How does that compare with the JHS little black buffer pedal? And do you know why Daniel Carson uses a little buffer AND a BBE sonic stomp? Thanks!

    • i don’t really know a lot about the difference between the two buffers…my guess is that there isn’t a lot. dan makes great stuff so i’m sure it’s probably just as good as JHS stuff. for daniel, the buffer was to give a stronger signal and the sonic stomp was for tone-tweaking on the fly (giving more sparkle or beef), but he’s not using the buffer currently.

  35. Hey nathan I’m looking for a really good versatile guitar for worship music. Which of your guitars do you like/ play more and which do you find more versatile? I’ve been looking at buying a Duesenberg Starplayer TV, Gretsch Duo/Power Jet, or a Nash Tele. If you could have one for worship music, which would it be? Thanks!

(I know it’s personal preference and that all of these guitars are very good, I’m just wondering what you think.)

    • Sorry I forgot to ask, which Lava Cables should I buy for my pedalboard? There are a lot of different options on the Lava Cable site. Which is best for pedalboards?

      • buy the custom pedalboard kit with right angle plugs. that’s what i’ve found is best.

    • i’m a big starplayer fan, but gretsch makes some great stuff too! i think my starplayer is more versatile than my tele, but the tele has a classic sound and i’ll always have a need for it. and sometimes the single coils in a tele can buzz more than the starplayer…just something else to think about.

    • the big switcher? it’s a true bypass strip…it’s used to isolate the pedals so each is in true bypass when not on. i don’t have it anymore…but it’s nice for tone and for switching pedals on and off easily.

  36. Hey Nathan, love the site, a real blessing!
I Wanted to know how you set up your DD5 for reverse? You said you got the settings from Dan, and I always loved his live sound back when Chris lead worship at Austin Stone, so was curious as to how you set yours…
    Thanks again
    Patrick
